Frequency of maintenance
So many products, so little time. Fortunately, on this page you can read a number of useful tips & tricks that will help you maintain your furniture. The tips are sorted by leather type.
The sequence
You have a set of maintenance products, but which step should be done first? It depends on:
- The type of leather
- The situation (stains, discoloration, dehydration, damage)
- The use (when and why?)
Different leathers, different sets
Not every cleanser / lotion can be used on the same leather. So different leather types have a different sequence for maintenance. However, the frequency is often the same. In general maintain your leather every six months to keep it in top condition (depending on the place / use the frequency can be higher).
The following sequence applies to pigmented (P), aniline (A), and saddle (S) leathers:
- In the first place, you make sure that the leather is free of dust.
- First use the Keralux® mild cleaner / soft cleaner, see instructions on the packaging.
- Rinse thoroughly with distilled water, allow to dry for approximately 1 hour.
- Use the Keralux® lotion to nourish / protect the leather.
- Then let it dry well for about 1-2 hours.
For vintage (V) leather:
- In the first place you make sure that the leather is free of dust.
- First use the Keralux® vintage cleaner, see instructions on the packaging.
- Rinse thoroughly with distilled water, allow to dry for approximately 1 hour.
- Use the Keralux® lotion to nourish the leather.
- Then let it dry well for about 1-2 hours.
- Then use the Keralux® spray N to protect the leather.
- Let dry again for 1-2 hours.
For nubuck (N) leather:
- In the first place, you ensure that the leather is free of dust.
- First use the Keralux® mild cleaner / soft cleaner, see instructions on the packaging.
- Rinse thoroughly with (preferably) distilled water, let it dry for approximately 1 hour.
- Use the Keralux® lotion to nourish the leather.
- Then let it dry well for about 1-2 hours.
- Use the Keralux® cloth for nubuck to roughen the leather.
- Vacuum up the remnants of the cloth (crumbles) using a vacuum cleaner.
- Then use the Keralux® spray N to protect the leather.
- Let dry again for 1-2 hours.
The situation
In the case of stubborn stains, discoloration, wear or damage, an alternative sequence may provide a better result. Always contact us in the above situations, or send a photo directly by e-mail. It may also be that we recommend a slightly different treatment, because we think this will give you a better endresult.
The use
We recommend cleaning and nourishing / protecting leather every six months. If you don't do this, leather can dry out faster and is more prone to discoloration and stains. The frequency of maintenance also depends on the use of the furniture. On average, a recliner makes more hours than a "side chair". This also applies to certain parts of a large corner sofa.
Therefore, always check which parts require extra attention, or which ones do not. Maintenance twice a year is only an average. It may be enough to maintain your chair only once a year. But it may also be that the leather needs a little more, do not hesitate to give it more attention.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Check the contact page for more information.
New Furniture
With the exception of pigmented smooth leather, we recommend maintaining new furniture from day 1 with the recommended lotion (and when applicable: the Keralux® spray N).
You don't have to clean brand new furniture first. Dust them off for a while and use a thin layer of lotion / spray to maintain the furniture.
Then follow the prescribed frequency as described above.
Tip: do you want extra protection for your new furniture with pigmented leather from day 1? This is possible with the Keralux® strong protector. Ideal for light-colored furniture that is more prone for jeans stains.
